Surprise Half Marathon
I’m back!
My friend Dan Rose, ultramarathoner extraordinaire, was running a one-man race across half of Pennsylvania this weekend. And I just happened to be in Pennsylvania, not more than a few miles from the last leg of his race. So I strapped on a new pair o’ Brooks Adrenalines and went out for a jog. A long jog.
I wasn’t trained for anything like this distance, but the mixed terrain and slow pace made it feel sort of easy. I’ll hurt tomorrow, but I’ve been more wrecked. I mostly feel that yummy post-workout all-body glow. Maybe I’m just high on endorphins and it will all come crashing down tomorrow.

Quickie swim
Quickie might be the word when it comes to swimming. I actually felt like this was a fair aerobic workout–compared to normally when I get out of the pool feeling like I might has well have hit the hot tub for all the calories burned.
I was in a hurry so I did short rests, and I was in the fast lane so I did fast sets.
100 warmup
5 x 200 on a 10 sec rest
100 cool
Also, figured that my swim pace is about 10:00 per 500 yards–so I can stop counting laps now.

core work epiphany
I realized yesterday that I never do core work after my cardio workout because I’m so sweaty, I don’t want to lie down on the mats. Aha! Must do core work first!!

Great longer HIIT run!
Did a 1/2 mile warmup at an easy pace, followed by about 15 mins steady-state at 6.6 mph (!!!!!) followed by my hardest intervals yet:
90 sec at 7.2
90 sec at 6.4 ** i just want to take a moment and gloat about the fact that I am recovering at what used to be my maximum speed right now**
90 sec at 7.4
90 sec at 6.3
90 sec at 7.2
2:00 recovery
Then a really tough new maneuver I’m calling a stairway (because it was inspired by my favorite Led Zepplin song for running): 30 sec at 6.5, 30 sec at 6.6, 30 sec at 6.7… etc up to 30 sec at 7.2.
Then I got tossed off my treadmill, moved to a different one, and finished up 5 miles with 1.5 more at a steady 6.2. Interesting the new treadmill felt harder. Not sure whether it was actually harder or if my legs were just unwilling.

Stadiums x 1.5 times
Am going to have to stop going with slowpoke friend. I left her behind for some of workout, but felt bad about it. Plus slowpoking around in the gym, chatting with people… argh.
Ran up about 1/4 of the sets. Quads sore the next day!

It has been a while for this route. This felt extremely hilly… it seemed like it was 95% downhill. But the distance felt short!
